Common Sense Is Not So Common

We have all heard someone use the phrase “common sense”. I know I am guilty of wondering why someone didn’t have common sense. It seems so simple for someone to have it. There’s one reason why common sense, as we think it to be, isn’t shared by everyone in the same way. Common sense isn’t so common.

We all interpret common sense based on our own experiences and knowledge. We often assume that everyone should think and act exactly how we would behave in a given situation, but we all know that almost never happens. The idea of common sense is quite egotistical when you really think about it.

Every person’s brain is unique in the way their mind interprets the world. The only way common sense would actually be common is if everyone thought the same way. Essentially we would all have to be robots programmed to have identical thoughts. Where would new ideas come from if that were the case? Who would have created the program that governs our thought process? That would make for a very bland world. Nobody would stand out from the rest. Relationships would presumably be pointless without new thoughts to interject into conversations.

We all make mistakes. We are humans. Humans are extremely fallible. Odds are that someone has questioned why you don’t appear to have any common sense. Next time you ask why someone wouldn’t use common sense to make a decision, realize that there is no such thing.
